Just how much meat will I get back?
This is one of the most common questions we get at The Chopping Block. Hunters want to know how much their deer or wild hog will yield. The answer is, it depends. Several factors determine how much meat you will take home, including the condition and diet of the animal, and the placement of the kill shot.
Since there are variables, there are no guaranteed numbers. One important variable we have not discussed is whether or not you get your animal boned out. Steaks, roasts and pork chops all have bones in them, which of course adds weight. If you get all sausage and jerky, you'll end up getting less total weight back.
Here's an example: If you kill a deer that weights 175 lbs live, you'll have about 114 lbs once you field dress it, skin it and remove the head. From there, you should end up with about 55-60 lbs of meat. Again, keep in mind, these are not exact numbers, and a lot depends upon the condition of the animal when you bring it in, and where the kill shot was made. For wild hogs, the yield is slightly higher because of the anatomy of the animal.
You can rest assured at The Chopping Block, our goal is to get you as much meat as possible from your catch. We also want you to have a realistic expectation as to how much meat you'll be taking home.
